GM actually made a concept with this feature. It was a dually width axle with only outboard wheels. By doing that they made the inside of the bed without having to resort to wheel well intrusions. IIRC they didn't do it because it would have been cost prohibitive. I can't find any pictures of it because my googlefu is weak today. It was about the era of the pictured truck and I can't remember the name of the concept.
